Did you know that you can use WhatsApp on your PC without your phone or without having to turn on mobile data? Whatsapp has recently introduced a feature that will allow people to use the WhatsApp web without necessarily having their phone with them or data on hand, but there is a catch.
We all know that you may send and receive WhatsApp messages from your computer using Whatsapp Web, which syncs with the smartphone app. You may use WhatsApp on both your phone and your PC.
PSST, For those who don’t know what WhatsApp web is, Here is a brief description:
WhatsApp Web is a web-based application that allows you to use your WhatsApp account on your computer. It allows you to use your computer instead of your phone to talk with individuals on WhatsApp. As a result, before you can use WhatsApp Web, you must first have WhatsApp installed on your phone. You log in simply by scanning a QR code on your computer with your phone. This mirrors WhatsApp, syncing your contacts and messages so that anything you do on WhatsApp Web happens on your phone and vice versa.
Being a Computer Science student, I use my laptop almost all the time, and sometimes it is just inconvenient to have to pick up my phone every time just to check my WhatsApp messages. And so I have been heavily relying on the WhatsApp web for my WhatsApp messages. But it was annoying to have had data on every time I wanted to access WhatsApp. The phone can be distracting at times, especially with data on. You can easily end up in a cycle of notifications and notifications and end up doing a lot of nothing. For this reason, I ended up not liking WhatsApp web, especially when I only wanted to access important business and school communications via WhatsApp without necessarily having to get all the other notifications.
But thanks to the new updates, you can now access WhatsApp web without having your phone data on! That’s Big! But of course, there is a catch … You will need your phone for the first connection only, and that’s it! You can then open WhatsApp web anytime, anywhere so long as your computer is connected to the net, even if your phone is off!
Of course, this works on the web version of WhatsApp web and the desktop app. But, you will need to have the official version of Whatsapp from the play store to be able to achieve this. The unofficial apps haven’t added this feature yet, which is not surprising. Considering the other risks that come with such apps, I would not worry much about them. I have tested this on the android version of WhatsApp and will be soon testing the IOS version. So forget about the android emulators that can be resource munchers!
So how do I connect? Here are the steps …
How to use WhatsApp on your PC without being connected your phone:
- Using the WhatsApp Web, all you need to do is to open a browser-based application on your computer (Brave, Chrome, Mozilla, or Explorer etc.).
- Then open WhatsApp on your phone with your data ON.
- Then click on the 3dots at the top right.
- Click on the linked device option.
- When opened, you’ll see two options, link a device and multi-device beta. You might need to get an update to the latest version of WhatsApp from the playstore to see this.
- Click on multi-device beta and then,
- Scan the QR code to link your account.
Wait while it connects. Once done, you’re all set to chat on your computer while you can choose to keep your data off. That’s it! Just don’t clear your entire browser history and cookies or else you will have to set it up again.
